1. Click 'Start,' 'Control Panel,' 'Hardware and Sound' and 'Devices and Printers.'
2. Right-click on the printer you wish to upgrade the drivers for (it will be listed under 'Printers and Faxes') and select 'Printer Properties.'
3. Click 'Change Properties' located under the 'General' tab.
4. Click on the 'Advanced' tab and select 'New Driver.' This will open the driver wizard for the printer you selected. Select 'Next' to continue.
5. Choose the manufacturer of your printer in the left-hand column and the printer model type in the right-hand column.
6. Select 'Windows Update' to have Windows search for new drivers for that printer. If they are found, Windows will alert you and request permission to install the new drivers. If you downloaded the printer drivers from a website, continue to the Downloaded Drivers section.
Downloaded Drivers
1. Go to the website of the printer's manufacturer and search its support and download page. If the manufacturer creates its own updated drivers for its printers, they will be available here for download. Enter in your model of printer and save the drivers to your hard drive.
2. Complete the Windows Update section's Steps 1 through 5 again.
3. Select 'Have disk' to manually update the printers. Click the 'Browse' button and navigate to the folder where you downloaded the drivers onto your hard drive.
4. Click 'OK.' If Windows sees the new drivers in the selected folder, it will be ready to install them. Agree to upgrade the drivers and let Windows finish the installation.
