1. Attach the outer panels that come separately packaged with the 5510 printer. These panels snap into place and do not require tools.
2. Set the printer within a few feet of the computer so that you can connect it to the computer with a USB cord and close enough to a telephone jack to use the fax function. Plug the printer's power adapter in and plug the square end of the USB cable into the back of the printer.
3. Plug a phone cord into the printer's 1-Line jack to enable faxing; this jack is on the back of the printer, to the left of the 2-Ext port. Connect the other end of the phone cord to a telephone jack.
4. Remove the cartridges from the box and peel the protective tape from the cartridge's connectors.
5. Lift the ink-cartridge access door on the front of the printer above the paper tray. The carriage will move to the middle.
6. Slide the two ink cartridges into the slots that correspond to the numbers on the cartridges. If correctly installed, they should click into place without excessive force.
7. Open the paper tray and add paper.
8. Insert the installation disk that came with the printer into your computer. Allow the program to open automatically or open it from the 'My Computer' tab in the Windows Start Menu.
9. Follow prompts to install basic printer drivers or to install the expanded HP printer software package. If you only use the printer for basic functions, the standard drivers may suffice. However, to access specific HP features such as ink-level monitoring and solutions to common problem you need to install the expanded version.
10. Follow prompts in the installation software to plug the printer's USB cord into the computer. Click 'Finish' when the software install is complete. Print a test page from your computer to test the installation.
