1. Research websites like eBay, your local Craigslist and online dealers for used jet skis. Shop any local dealers in your area to see if they have used jet skis. Your best bet for finding the right price most likely lies in the classifieds or Craigslist. Private party sellers are usually looking to unload a jet ski they no longer use and have no room for.
2. Ask the seller of the jet ski as many details as possible, including the length of time they have owned it, how much it has been used during that time, whether they purchased it used or new, how much maintenance they have performed and if they've replaced any parts. Before making your purchase, make sure you're as familiar as possible with the jet ski.
3. Inspect the jet ski from top to bottom. While it's most important to make sure the engine is in good, working order, pay attention to the exterior of the jet ski and its trailer as well. You can tell by the exterior condition how much the seller used it, how they took care of it and where they stored it. If you're not sure what to look for mechanically, bring along a friend or someone with a lot of knowledge about jet skis. Used jet skis sold by private parties don't come with warranties so any problems after the sale are your responsibility.
4. Take the jet ski out for a test drive if the owner allows it. You need to know how much power the jet ski has and whether it suits your needs or not. This may not be possible if you are not very close to a body of water or if you're purchasing from a dealer; however, if your seller lives on the water, you may be able to try it out there. The biggest downside to purchasing a used jet ski is that, unlike a car, you often can't test it out before a purchase.
