How to Troubleshoot a Brother MFC

1. Check to make sure that the phone line is properly secured if you receive an error message that reads 'comm.error' on your printer display screen. Attempt the call again once you have properly secured the phone line.
2. Remove a paper jam if you are unable to print or receiving a paper jam error message. To do this, gently remove the paper tray located on the front of your MFC printer. Once this is removed, you can gently pull any jammed paper from the rollers.
3. Remove a paper jam from the ADF unit if there was not a jam in the paper tray. The ADF unit is the lid of the printer that can be lifted up. To do this, lift the ADF cover and gently remove any jammed paper.
4. Check to see if the printer has any printing, copying, faxing or scanning jobs in the queue if you are receiving an 'unable to print' error message. To do this, press the 'Menu/Set' button, followed by the numbers '9', '0', '1'. If there is a job in the queue, finish that job before starting a new one.
5. Reset the printer if the previous steps were not effective at solving your problem. To do this, turn the printer off and unplug the power cord. Wait a few minutes and plug the printer back in. Try your print job again.
