How to Make a Big Sister Shirt

1. Purchase a white or light-colored shirt. This can be a T-shirt, long-sleeved shirt or sweatshirt. For decorating purposes, it should be light-colored, such as light yellow, pink or lavender. The shirt should be the appropriate size for the big sister.
2. Prewash the shirt. Prewashing helps the shirt accept the designs better, and also shrinks to a slightly smaller size.
3. Choose a saying for the shirt. You can make the shirt say whatever you want, but several common sayings are “I’m the Big Sister,” “Big Sis,” and “World’s Greatest Big Sister.”
4. Purchase or make iron-on transfers. Most craft stores sell iron-on letters and pictures. If you decide to make your own, you must buy iron-on paper and print them using your computer and printer.
5. Apply the transfers. Arrange the transfers in a way that looks good. Around the saying on the shirt, add small pictures such as a little girl, a butterfly or hearts. To apply the transfers, follow the package directions. Normally to apply iron-ons, you must set your iron to the wool/cotton setting, avoid steam, and iron each piece for 5 to 10 seconds.
6. Apply fabric paint. If you want to skin the transfers, write your saying with fabric paint. You can also use fabric paint in addition to the transfers, to make the shirt more unique and creative.
