1. Turn on your Epson Stylus NX400 series printer.
2. Lift the top of the printer—the entire scanner assembly—up and rest it on its hinges in an open, angled position. If you’re changing ink cartridges without a low or expended ink cartridge message appearing on the LCD screen, push the “Setup” button on the control panel, select “Maintenance,” push the “OK” button, select “Change Ink Cartridge” and then press “OK” again before lifting the top of the printer.
3. Grasp the back edge of the cartridge cover and pull the cover toward you to open it. When you pull, it should flip back on its hinge so that it hangs from the front of the printer.
4. Lay a fingertip on the grooved tab on the first cartridge that you're changing. Squeeze the tab gently to unlock the cartridge from the cartridge holder. Pull the cartridge straight up out of the holder and set it aside for disposal.
5. Pick up the new replacement cartridge in its sealed packaging and shake it four to five times rapidly. Remove it from its packaging and pull the yellow tape from the cartridge without touching the green chip.
6. Align the replacement cartridge over the empty slot, insert it into the holder and then push down on it until you hear a click confirming that it has locked in placed.
7. Repeat the removal and replacement process with the other cartridges if necessary.
8. Flip the cartridge cover over the cartridge holder. Press down to lock it in place over the cartridges.
9. Lower the entire scanner assembly carefully into its previous position. Push the “OK” button to charge the ink within the cartridges and then wait for approximately two minutes for a message to appear on the LCD confirming that the charging process has ended.
