How to Clean HP 5650 Printer Cartridges

1. Go to the printer maintenance section of your computer for automatic cleaning of the HP 5650 cartridge by double-clicking the HP Deskjet Toolbox shortcut on your desktop computer.
2. Click 'Settings,' 'Print Settings,' then 'Printer Settings.' You will see the 'Properties' dialog box open for the printer. Click on the tab that reads 'Services.'
3. Click 'Clean the Print Cartridges,' then read and follow the instructions on your computer screen.
4. Calibrate your printer according to your computer's instructions, then print a test page to make certain the cleaning worked. If you still see streaking or missing lines of the test page, the printer cartridge may need manual cleaning.
Manual cleaning
1. Put on rubber gloves, then turn on your printer by pressing the power button.
2. Raise the printer cover and remove all print cartridges, placing them with the nozzle plate facing up on a paper towel. The nozzle plate looks like a black rectangle on top of the print cartridge, on the end over the copper-colored contacts.
3. Dip a cotton swab into the distilled water, squeezing the excess water out. If you do not have distilled water, you can use bottled or filtered water. Do not use tap water when cleaning HP cartridges. The contaminants present in tap water can cause damage to the cartridges.
4. Wipe the cotton swab around the nozzle plate and the copper contacts only. Do not touch the copper contacts or the rectangular ink nozzle plate with your fingers to avoid creating poor electrical connections and clogs. Keep cleaning the area with damp cotton swabs until you see no more dust or ink on the swab.
5. Dry the cleaned areas using a clean cotton swab. Replace the print cartridges and close the printer cover.
