1. Open the package and assemble your printer, if required. Most HP printers require you to attach the paper tray. Do so according to the package instructions.
2. Connect the power cord to the rear of the printer, then plug the other end of the cord into your power outlet. Turn the printer on.
3. Open the cover and install the print cartridges. Wait for the cartridge tray to move to the appropriate position, then insert the cartridges.
4. Load a few sheets of paper into your HP printer. The printer needs paper to print a test page.
5. Connect the printer to your computer. Most newer HP printers use USB connections; if yours does not, attach it using a parallel printer cable (you'll need to tighten the screws).
6. Insert the installation disc into your Dell's disc drive. Wait for the program to start and install the necessary drivers. If you don't have an installation disc, you can download them from the HP website.
7. Click 'Start' and choose 'Control Panel.' Choose 'Hardware' or 'Hardware and Sound,' depending on your operating system. Choose 'Add a Printer.' Select 'Device is Already Connected.'
8. Follow the prompts to complete your installation. When you reach the end, select 'Print a Test Page.' Wait for your printer to print the test page. If the page is blank, you may have incorrectly installed your ink cartridges. If the page does not print, check the printer cable to ensure a proper connection.
