How to Operate a Handheld Bar Code Scanner (7 Steps)

1. Connect the handheld scanner to the computer or host through the serial interface port using an RS232 cable. Some scanners connect via USB (Universal Serial Bus) and some are wireless. Plug in the USB-type scanners to the corresponding USB port of the computer, and for wireless, make sure to connect the wireless hub onto the host that will the handheld device will connect to.
2. Turn on the system. In some cases, you can use the serial interface if it has a power connection. If it does not have one, you can attach an AC adapter, which you can connect to the interface.
3. Configure the scanner. Find the parameters to change and then make changes as needed. The bar code menu setup includes device selection, beep and delay, keyboard and wand emulating, RS232 settings, and scanner port settings.
4. Scan the SET ID bar code to program the symbols to use. Scan the two alphanumeric characters, and then scan the bar code again.
5. Install the 'Scanner Configure Manager Software' on your computer, which is a program used to configure the settings on a system that runs on Windows operating system. You can download the parameters by using this software so that it can use similar settings on the handheld device.
6. Test the bar code handheld scanner. Point the scanner close to the bar code; make sure that the laser is pointing close to it. Press the 'trigger' or button to register the information. View the information either on the computer or on the handheld scanner viewer. If it registers the correct code and parameters, your bar code scanner is working properly. Make the necessary corrections as needed.
7. Hit cancel on the computer keyboard if you need to redo the scan in case of mistakes, such as double scanning an item or scanning the incorrect item.
