1. Turn on the printer. Open the main lid or hatch. Printers come in many shapes and sizes. Look for the main compartment where you think the ink cartridges might be. If you need help, consult the manufacturer's webpage (See resources for popular printer manufacturers.)
2. Press the lever to open the cartridge housing. Many but not all cartridges are encased in a cartridge housing.
3. Pull on the cartridge slowly, in an up-and/or-down and outward way. It shouldn't take much effort. If there is a problem removing the cartridge, consult the manufacturer. Do not try to pry or force it out, as this might damage your printer.
4. Repeat step 3 for every cartridge you need to remove. Some printers have one black and multiple color ink cartridges, while some have one black and one multi-color cartridge.
5. Shut the hatch and or lid, and turn off the printer.
