1. Find a photo to use for the transfer. You can find a photo on the Internet or scan your own photo into your computer. Make sure the photo is of good quality.
2. Choose your favorite page layout or graphics program. There are many to choose from.
3. Find the right transfer paper for your project. For inkjet transfers you can get standard for light fabric, opaque for darker fabrics or super soft for really delicate or stretchy fabrics.
4. Open your image with your chosen software program. Adjust the levels and color. Resize the image to the correct size so it will fit on your transfer paper. Leave a small margin on all sides.
5. Perform a test run with regular paper first, to preview the margins, color, size and placement of your document. This will save you time in the long run.
6. Remove all the paper from the printer's paper tray and use one sheet of transfer paper at a time. Many transfer papers have stripes or a design on the non-printing side. Make sure the side of the paper that is facing up is the smooth white side.
7. Flip or mirror your image. You need to do a mirror image in your graphics program, so when it prints, it will look correct on the finished product, especially important if the design has text.
8. Print it. In your software's toolbar, select 'file' then 'print.' Next, click on 'properties.' Choose the settings you need and select 'okay' or 'print.'
9. Wait for ink on the transfer paper to dry before handling it. Now, trim the design so there is little or no margin around it before ironing it on.
