1. Disconnect the HP Pavilion DV6000 from the docking station if you use one. A short or bad driver in the docking station could cause startup issues in the laptop. Test the laptop speed outside the docking station. If the DV6000 runs faster out of the dock than in it, that points to an issue with the docking station and not the laptop.
2. Remove any peripherals that are attached directly to the DV6000, including printers, card readers and other devices. Run the laptop without those peripherals, then add each one back one at a time until you find the problem device. Download a new driver for the device and install it on the DV6000.
3. Remove any CDs or DVDs from the DV6000 optical drive. If the laptop is set to try to boot from the optical drive first, it attempts to read the media in that drive, which can slow the startup process down considerably.
4. Shut down the HP DV6000 and wait for it to power off. Press the power button and wait for the memory count to complete, then press the F10 button to enter the setup mode. Scroll over to the diagnostics menu and run all available tests on the hard drive and memory. Back up your files immediately if the tests reveal any issues with the hard drive. Replace any faulty memory modules with new ones if any of the modules fail the diagnostic tests.
