How to Troubleshoot an HP 6940 (9 Steps)

1. Wait 1 minute to see if the printer will resume the print job. Press the 'Resume' button if the printer stays idle.
2. Open the printer's top cover and wait for the cartridge carriage to stop moving. Unplug the power cord from the back of the printer.
3. Inspect the inside of the printer for any broken or loose parts and contact a repair shop if you find any. Remove any stuck paper inside the printer, including along the carriage's pathway.
4. Remove the print cartridges from the carriage, then insert the color cartridge on the left side and the black cartridge on the right side. Press on the top of each cartridge until they click if they wobble at all in the carriage.
5. Lower the printer's top cover and plug the power cord back into the rear of the machine. If the printer does not resume printing, contact a repair shop.
Print Speed is Slow
1. Close all programs you do not need to have open on the attached computer. Running too many programs can slow the communication between the printer and the computer.
2. Click on the 'Start' or Windows button on the bottom of the computer's screen and select 'Printers.' Right click on the 6940's icon, click on 'Properties' and then click on the 'Quality' tab.
3. Click on the box next to 'Normal' in the section labeled 'Print Quality.' Click on 'Ok' to save you selection, then try printing again.
4. Open the printer's top cover and wait for the cartridge carriage to park. If you see only one ink cartridge inside the printer, unwrap a new cartridge from its package, install it in the empty slot and then close the top cover.
