How to Find out Ink Levels in an HP Printer

1. Check to see whether your printer allows you to check the ink levels via a software interface. Many models of HP printer provide such an interface, and it is a quick and easy way to check the ink levels for both color and black and white printing. If your printer has this ability, simply click on 'Start,' choose 'Control Panel' from the menu and select 'Printers and Faxes.' Right-click your printer and choose 'Preferences' from the menu, click the 'Services' tab and choose 'Service this Device.' When the toolbox opens select 'Ink Levels' to see the current ink levels in the printer.
2. Open up the top cover of the printer and wait for the print cartridges to come to the center. Look for an indicator line on the print cartridge. This line is used to indicate how much ink remains in the printer. The exact location of this line will vary from cartridge to cartridge, but it will generally be located on the front of the cartridge.
3. Print a test page from the printer by clicking on 'Start,' choosing 'Control Panel' from the menu and double-clicking 'Printers and Faxes.' Then right-click on the printer, choose 'Properties' and click the 'Print Test Page' button. Look carefully at the output, paying particular attention to the quality of the colors. If the colors appear to be washed out or faded, the color cartridge is probably running low and will need to be replaced.
