1. Click 'Start', then 'Run', type 'cmd' and click 'OK'.
2. Type 'net stop wuauserv' and click 'Enter'. Type 'net stop bits' and click 'Enter'. This will turn off 'Background Intelligent Transfer Service' and 'Automatic Updates'.
3. Type 'net stop cryptsvc' and click 'Enter'. Type 'ren %systemroot%\System32\Catroot2 oldcatroot2' and click 'Enter'. Type 'net start cryptsvc' and click 'Enter'. This will rename 'Catroot2'. Type 'exit' to close 'command prompt'.
4. Click 'Start', 'Run' and type '%systemroot%' before clicking 'OK'. Right-click the 'Software Distribution' folder and select rename. Type 'SoftwareDistribution.old' as the new name.
5. Open 'command prompt' again by; clicking 'Start', 'Run', typing 'cmd' and clicking 'OK'. Type 'regsvr32 wuapi.dll' and click 'Enter'. Type 'regsvr32 wuaueng1.dll' and click 'Enter'. Type 'regsvr32 wuaueng.dll' and click 'Enter'. Type 'regsvr32 wucltui.dll' and click 'Enter'. Type 'regsvr32 wups2.dll' and click 'Enter'. Type 'regsvr32 wups.dll' and click 'Enter'. Type 'regsvr32 wuweb.dll' and click 'Enter'. This will register the files used by 'Windows Update'.
6. Type 'net start bits' and click 'Enter'. Type 'net start wuauserv' and click 'Enter'. Type 'net start Eventlog' and click 'Enter'. This will restart 'Background Intelligent Transfer Service' and 'Automatic Updates' Type 'exit' to close 'command prompt'. Everything will now work as normal.
