1. Click the 'Start' button on your desktop. Click 'All Programs,' 'Hewlett-Packard' and 'Printer Assistant.'
2. Choose 'Utilities' in the Printer Assistant window. Click the 'View Ink Levels' button. Click 'Printer Maintenance' and select 'Clean Cartridges.'
3. Follow the prompt onscreen to start the cartridge cleaning process. Check the paper tray and confirm that there is paper in the tray. Discard the printed page when cleaning completes.
Deskjet 5400 and 5940 Series
1. Launch a word processing application. Click 'File' and choose 'Print.'
2. Click 'Properties' and select 'Services.' Click 'Service this Device' to launch the HP Toolbox.
3. Click 'Clean the Print Cartridges' and follow the prompt to clean the cartridges. Confirm that there is paper in the printer, and discard the printed page when the cleaning stops.
Deskjet 5650 and 5850 Series
1. Double-click the HP Deskjet Toolbox icon on your computer's desktop. Click 'Settings' and choose 'Print Settings.'
2. Click 'Printer Settings' to open the 'Printer Properties' window. Click 'Services.'
3. Click the 'Clean the Print Cartridges' option. Confirm that there is paper in the printer. Discard the printed page after cleaning.
