How to Install Ink in a HP Photosmart Printer

1. Turn the power on to your HP Photosmart printer. Make sure that there is paper in the paper tray. Open the cover to expose the ink cartridge carrier. Wait while the ink carrier shifts to the right side of the printer. If the cartridge does not shift to the right, turn the printer off and then turn it back on.
2. Push down on the ink cartridge to unlock it from the carrier. Pull the cartridge straight out of the printer. Remove the cartridge to the left to change the color cartridge and the cartridge to the right to change the black cartridge.
3. Pull the tab to remove the tape from the new ink cartridge. Insert the cartridge into the carrier, holding it by the plastic case to avoid touching the contacts. Push the cartridge into the carrier until it clicks in place.
4. Repeat the process on the opposite ink cartridge if necessary. Push the carrier door closed until it clicks. Wait for a test page to print. Place the test page on the scanner glass, then press 'Scan' to align the new cartridges.
