How to Convert Scans Into Editable Text with an HP Scanjet

1. Connect your Scanjet to your computer using a USB cable, and turn both on.
2. Install HP Director software. A copy comes on a disk with every HP Scanjet. If you do not have a disk, you can download the software from HP's website. Go to HP Support, enter your model name into the dialog box, then click on 'Drivers and Software.' HP Director is included in the driver packages.
3. Open the program by double-clicking on the 'HP Director' icon on your desktop or clicking 'Start,' 'Programs,' 'HP Scanjet,' 'HP Photo and Imaging Director.'
4. Select 'Scan Document Settings' from the 'Settings' menu.
5. Open the 'Editable Text Settings' tab, and click on either 'Framed text' or 'Flowed text.' Framed text will preserve the formatting of the paper document, but may make it difficult to reformat later, while flowed text eliminates all formatting and just brings in the characters.
6. Choose the language of the document from the drop-down list of OCR languages.
7. Click 'OK,' then click 'Scan Document.' In the dialog box that opens, there is a column asking 'What are you scanning?' Select either 'Editable text' or 'Editable text with graphics,' and choose the word processor to receive it.
8. Click 'Scan.' When the job is done, your chosen word processor will open with a new document displaying the text.
