How to Format Mailing Envelopes

1. Write your return address in the front upper-left corner of the envelope. The writing area should not exceed 50 percent of the envelope's length, nor 33 percent of it's height. On separate lines, include your name, company (if applicable), street address, and finally your city, state and zip code. If your letter is going overseas, include the country on the last line; this is not required for domestic mail.
2. Address the recipient in the middle area, leaving at least a 1-inch margin on each side and 5/8-inch margin at the bottom. Include the same fields as the return address -- i.e., name, company, address, city/state/zip and country (if going overseas). The top line should align just past the bottom line of the return address. The entire address should be left-justified.
3. Place the stamp in the upper-right corner of the envelope.
4. Add any required bar code on the lower-right side of the envelope, just after the last line of the recipient address. Normally, this will not be necessary.
5. Ensure that no characters on the recipient address overlap, and use highly contrasting colors, such as black ink on white paper. Capitalize all letters, and avoid using punctuation. Print the addresses, or carefully handwrite the address to ensure legibility.
