1. Print a list of your current hardware. In Windows XP, right-click 'My Computer' and choose 'Properties,' then choose the 'Device Manager' tab. Click once on any of the items in the list, then click the printer icon at the top of the window.
2. Check the OSX86 Hardware Compatibility List (HCL) to see if your computer's hardware is supported. Check each component from your Device Manager Printout against the list. Most standard PC hardware is supported, but some devices have limited functionality or require a hack to make them work. Take note of any of these devices.
3. Insert the iPC 10.5.6 DVD into your computer and reboot. Most computers are already configured to boot from the DVD drive, but some people may have to adjust their BIOS accordingly. Press 'Enter' when your system boots from the DVD and gives the prompt 'Press ENTER to start the Installer.' It is normal for the Installer to take several minutes to load.
4. Choose your language and click the 'Continue' button. Read the 'Agreement' through to the end. It contains important information about the installation process, including tips and warnings for specific hardware. When you are done, accept the agreement and click 'Continue.'
5. Click on the 'Utilities' menu and select 'Disk Utility.' In the new window, select your hard drive on the left, and click the 'Partition' tab on the right. Under 'Volume Scheme' select '1 Partition.' Give your partition a name, and ensure that the file format is 'Mac OS Extended (Journaled), then click 'Apply,' and confirm by clicking 'Partition.' Close the Disk Utility when partitioning is complete.
6. Select your newly created partition as the install location, and click 'Continue.'
7. Click 'Customize' in the lower left corner of the installer window. Leaving 'iPC OSX86 Base System' checked, look through the 'Drivers' and 'Fixes and Patches' sections for items that apply to your system according to the HCL and your Device Manager printout. Most computers will need 'Patched USB Drivers,' 'UUID Error Fix' and 'Carbonlib fix'. It is easy to add components later, so if you are not sure, it is better to leave a component unchecked. Click 'OK,' then click 'Start Installation.'
8. When installation is complete, the Installer will restart your computer for you. Eject the iPC DVD and reboot a second time, before it gets to load anything. Your computer will prompt you to 'press any key to enter startup options.' Press a key, and type '-x -f' (without the quotes), then hit 'Enter' to start your new 'Hackintosh' PC.
Testing and Troubleshooting
1. Click on the volume control on the top menu bar and try adjusting the speaker volume. If sound is working, you will hear a confirmation noise from your speakers or headphones.
2. Connect to the Internet using your wireless device. Most devices are controlled from the Airport icon in the top menu bar.
3. Click on the apple menu, and choose 'About this Mac.' Confirm that the OS sees all of your RAM and the full speed of your processor, then click 'More Info...'
4. Use the System Profiler that appears to check correct identification of the rest of your hardware. In particular, check for graphic acceleration on your video card. Click on 'Graphics/Displays' and ensure that 'Core Image' is listed as 'Hardware Accelerated,' and 'Quartz Extreme' is 'Supported.'
