1. Ensure that the printer is already installed to one of the computers in the network. If it is not yet installed, use the cables that come with the printer upon purchase to connect it to the main computer, or the computer where you want the printer to be physically installed. Insert the printer installation CD into the optical drive of the computer. Wait for the driver to launch automatically, and then follow the instructions to complete the installation process.
2. Turn on 'Printer Sharing.' If you are using Windows XP, open the 'Control Panel,' and then 'Windows Firewall.' Click the 'Exceptions' tab and click the tick box for 'File and Printer Sharing.' If you are using Windows 7, click 'Start,' and then open the 'Control Panel.' Type 'network' in the search box and hit Enter. Select 'Network and Sharing Center,' and then 'Change advanced sharing settings.' Click the down arrow to expand the list of options and click 'Turn on File and Printer Sharing' under 'File and Printer Sharing.' Select 'Save Changes' and enter the administrator password to confirm your action.
3. Set up the printer so that it can be shared on the network. If you are using Windows XP, click 'Start,' 'Printers and Faxes,' and then browse for the name of your computer. Right click the printer icon and select 'Sharing.' Click the tick box for 'Share this printer,' enter the 'Share Name,' and then 'Apply.' For Windows 7 users, click 'Start,' and then 'Devices and Printers.' Right click the name of the printer you want to share and select 'Printer Properties.' Click the 'Sharing' tab and then 'Share this printer.'
4. Use another computer in the network to install the network printer. If the computer has Windows XP installed, click 'Start,' 'Printers and Faxes,' and then select the 'Add a Printer' option on the left side of the screen. Click 'Next,' and then select 'A network printer, or a printer attached to another computer.' Browse for the printer and follow further instructions until the network installation is complete. If you are using Windows 7, navigate to 'Devices and Printers' in the 'Start' menu and then select 'Add a printer.' Click 'Add a network, wireless or Bluetooth printer,' select the name of the shared printer, click 'Next,' and then follow the next instructions until the process is complete.
