1. Check that your computer's wireless adapter is enabled. Turn on your router and wireless printer.
2. Insert your installation CD (the one that came with the printer). If you bought your printer used or without a CD, check the manufacturer's website for drivers and installers for your model.
3. Select 'Install Printer Driver,' then 'Wireless Network Users' (Brother printers) and follow installation prompts, choosing 'Recommended' settings. Select 'Install Network/Wireless' device (HP printers) and follow the installation prompts. The computer will search for available wireless printers.
4. Select your printer from the list of available printers (if you have only one printer, you will likely only have one choice).
5. Connect the ethernet or USB cable to your printer and computer when prompted.
6. Enter your network key when the installers prompts you if your network is secure. Disconnect any cables you have connected to the printer, open a document and print a test page.
Connecting Through an Ad Hoc Network
1. Check that the wireless adapter on your computer is enabled and that your printer is on. Your computer and printer should be in the same room.
2. Install just the printer driver. Don't configure any network settings.
3. Open your computer's list of available wireless networks and select your printer's default network. HP printers' default network is 'hpsetup,' Check your printer manufacturer's manual to see if your printer has this capability.
4. Try to print a document to be sure your connection works.
