How to Scan Slides on Epson Scanners (10 Steps)

1. Place your slides in the slide tray for your scanner. Epson scanners capable of scanning slides come with trays for different types of film. The slide tray has a series of rectangular openings the size of a slide. Clean your slides with compressed air or a bulb blower before placing them in the slide tray.
2. Open the scanner lid and remove the white reflective surface, if it is installed, by pulling it toward the front of the scanner. Place the slide tray on the scanner bed.
3. Open 'Epson Scan.' Epson Scan is the scanner software that comes with Epson scanners.
4. Select 'Professional Mode.' Epson Scan defaults to 'Full Auto' mode when first installed. Professional Mode will allow you to scan slides. The mode setting drop-down menu is on the right side, at the top of the scanning dialog box.
5. Select 'Film' in the 'Document Type' drop-down menu. Then select 'Positive Film' in the 'Film type' drop-down menu. Selecting 'Color Negative' or 'B&W Negative' will result in the colors of the scan being inverted.
6. Select the resolution for your scan. 2400 DPI is generally a good resolution for 4-inch by 6-inch prints. Higher resolutions will allow for better quality for larger prints. For web display, 300 to 600 DPI should be sufficient.
7. Select 'Dust Removal' and 'Unsharp Mask' in the 'Adjustments' section of the scanner dialog box. Even though you have cleaned your slides, there will likely still be some dust on them. Dust removal will help to make this dust less noticeable.
8. Click the 'Preview' button. This will create a low resolution preview scan of all of your slides.
9. Select the slide by clicking and dragging in the preview window.
10. Click the 'Scan' button once you have selected the slide to be scanned. The scanner software will prompt you for a file name and location for the scanned image.
