1. Access the Windows 'Start' menu and click the 'Control Panel' link. Click 'System and Maintenance' and choose the 'Device Manager' link. Click 'Continue' if you are using Windows Vista.
2. Click the 'plus sign' icon positioned to the left of the 'Modems' entry in the list of device types. Right-click the name of your computer's modem and choose 'Properties.'
3. Navigate to the tab labeled 'Advanced.' Click the 'Advanced Port Settings' button at the bottom of the window.
4. Click the 'COM Port Number' drop-down menu at the bottom end of the window. Choose the 'COM3' option and click 'OK' to save the change. Restart your computer's operating system.
