How Do I Throw Away My Printer? (4 Steps)

1. Open the lid on your printer, while it is still plugged in, and pull out any remaining ink cartridges. Printer ink is considered an environmental hazard and should not be thrown into the garbage. Most printers will only allow you to access the ink bay when the printer is still plugged in.
2. Unplug the printer. Remove all detachable cables, such as the printer-to-PC data cable, and set them aside.
3. Take your ink cartridges to a local recycling center -- if you don't plan on using them with your new printer, or can not use them. Stores such as Best Buy and Staples have recycling sites set up within the store. They will take your printer ink and properly recycle it, ensuring that it does not pose any threat to the environment. They may also take your computer printer, depending on the location.
4. Find an electronics recycling center in your area. Sites such as Local.com and ElectronicsRecycling.com provide a list of all available centers near the area where you live. Type in your address to find the location of the nearest recycling center that accepts electronics. Take your old printer to the center to properly dispose of it.
