How to Troubleshoot a Brother HL 5250DN

1. Update the driver and software through the Brother website (see Resources section). Software issues and outdated drivers are a common cause of printer malfunctions. The downloads are free and will only take a few minutes to install.
2. Check all connections from the printer to your computer. The AC cord needs to be plugged in and the interface cable needs to be connected to an open port and in working order.
3. Print a test page to see if the printer is producing quality documents. To do this, hold down the 'Go' button on the printer after you press the power key. Release the 'Go' button once all of the LED lights turn off. Select 'Go' again to print the test page.
4. Review the status monitor of your Brother HL 5250DN printer to see if an error message is displayed. Potential messages include 'No Paper,' 'Low Toner,' 'Paper Jam' and 'Cover Open.'
5. Look in the paper output tray for any error message printouts. The Brother HL 5250DN has the ability to print out an error message if the memory is full or the resolution for the document is too high.
6. Remove the paper tray to make sure it is not overfilled. Check the carriage for any paper jams.
