How do I Troubleshoot a Canon Prixma Printer?

1. Check the power button on your Canon Pixma printer. Make sure that a green light is showing. If no light is visible, press the power button or check the cords to see if they are loose. If the light is flashing, reset both the printer and computer. If the printer is still flashing, see Step 10.
2. Check the USB port to see if it is working correctly. Plug your Canon Pixma printer into a different USB port if available. Check the USB drivers and reinstall if necessary.
3. Print a test page on your printer. If the text is faded or blurred, but the printer does not indicate that the ink cartridges are low, remove the print cartridges and reinstall. Run a cleaning cycle following the instructions in your printer manual. If further attention is needed, clean the print head and contacts on the ink cartridge manually using a cotton swab and isopropyl alcohol. Install new cartridges if nothing else works.
4. Read your manual to see if the paper or media type that you are using is compatible with and recommended for your Canon Pixma printer. Paper that is too thin may curl, bend or absorb too much ink.
5. Adjust the print quality to match the type of paper you are using. Open the 'Printer Properties' box and change the 'Print Quality' settings.
6. Clean the paper rollers. Open the 'Printer Properties' box. Select the 'Maintenance' tab. Press the option for 'Roller Cleaning.' Press 'OK.' Load several sheets of paper when the written screen dialogue prompts you to do so. Press 'OK' to complete the paper roller cleaning process.
7. Delete any unfinished print jobs from the active print tray on your computer's desktop. Right-click on the printer icon on the bottom of your screen to open the active print queue. Right-click on the print job and select 'Delete.' You can also access the queue by opening the 'Printer Properties' box and then pressing 'Maintenance,' 'View Printer Status' and 'Display Print Queue.' Select 'Cancel All Documents.'
8. Remove any paper jams that are interfering with proper operation of the Canon Pixma printer. Pull the paper gently out of the rollers. Grasp the paper and pull it downward from the bottom of the printer output tray. Grasp the top of the paper in the paper feed tray and pull it upward to remove jammed paper. Open the printer housing to grasp paper that is still firmly in the roller. Pull the paper gently away from the roller to release.
9. Reduce the amount of paper that is placed in the incoming paper tray. Too much paper can increase the risk of jams.
10. Check your Canon Pixma manual if the power light is flashing. Different flash patterns indicate different issues such as a paper jam or ink problem. Correct the specific problem according to the instructions in your manual. You may need to remove a jam, replace ink or check software.
11. Check your computer screen for error messages. Follow the instructions on the screen or in your manual to fix the issue.
