How to Get a HP Printer to Show a New Ink Cartridge When Refilling

1. Turn the ink cartridge over so that you see the contacts. Turn the ink cartridge around so that the contacts are at the bottom of the cartridge closest to you.
2. Look at the contacts. You will see the first row on the left hand side with 5 copper contacts and the second row with seven copper contacts. Place a small piece of scotch tape over the top contact, which would be the seventh contact in the second row.
3. Place the cartridge in the printer carriage and select 'Align cartridges' from the menu. Allow the printer to run the test page and when it is done remove the cartridge. Leave the tape on the contact.
4. Look at the bottom of the cartridge where the contacts are located again. The very last row on the right hand side has five copper contacts and the second row has six copper contacts. Place a piece of scotch tape over the sixth contact in the second last row.
5. Place the ink cartridge in the printer carriage and run another alignment page. When the printer is done with the test page, remove the cartridge from the printer carriage. Remove the tape from both contacts making sure to remove the adhesive residual. Place the ink cartridge back in the printer cartridge and continue with your printing tasks.
