How to Start a Business in Vinyl Printing

1. Learn the process of trimming, cutting and applying vinyl, including the quality and appropriate resolution of the vinyl, types of vinyl, and how to prepare a flat service or vehicle wrap either through on-the-job training or by getting certified. To learn how to apply quality vinyl that won't crack or fade in months, you'll need experience. Enroll in a certification primer course to learn surface preparation, positioning methods and other techniques for working on flat surfaces. Then consider enrolling in an introductory vehicle-wrapping course to gain experience wrapping vinyl. Visit the Professional Decal Application Alliance (PDAA) for details (see Resources).
2. Become a master imager and installer through the Professional Decal Application Alliance certification (offered by the Specialty Graphic Imaging Association) or by becoming a 3M installer.
3. Secure a location for your vinyl-cutting business, such as a warehouse that can accommodate your equipment and the vehicles you'll be wrapping. The venue should be able to house large banners or vinyl billboards. Create an eye-catching banner that advertises your services to place on your warehouse.
4. Invest in design software such as CorelDRAW or Adobe Illustrator.
5. Purchase a quality vinyl cutter with a capacity that can handle the size of your projects. For large products, check out Graphtec America's high-performance series or Roland's CAMM-1 PRO line of cutters, with widths of up to 54 inches (the company's cutters are compatible with Adobe Illustrator and CorelDRAW). Other considerations when selecting a cutter include the maximum media thickness, resolution, contour cutting option, warranty, and cutting force and speed.
6. Purchase cutting mats, cutting knives, rulers, tweezers, rivet brushes, applicators, media trays, pencils, a rivet sealer, squeegees, removal tools, substrates and high-performance vinyl from online vendors.
7. Design a portfolio and brochures with samples of your work. Contact small businesses, construction site managers, local theaters, sports teams and local organizations to show them the value in advertising with vinyl printing.
