How to Reset an Expired HP Inkjet Cartridge (7 Steps)

1. Remove the cartridge from the printer. Turn the cartridge over so the small metal leads are visible.
2. Place a small piece of invisible tape over the top four contact points on the left row. There are three rows of points on each side. The contact points resemble small gold dots.
3. Replace the cartridge in the printer. Close the lid. Wait at least 10 seconds. Open the printer lid.
4. Remove the cartridge from the printer after the carriage moves to the center of the printer so it can be accessed. An error message may display on the printer, which is normal.
5. Remove the strip of tape from the contacts points. Place the tape on the top right corner to cover the four points on the row on the right side. Replace the cartridge into the printer and close the lid. Wait 10 seconds. Open the printer lid.
6. Wait for the printer carriage to return to the center of the printer. Remove the cartridge from the printer.
7. Remove the tape from the contact points. Replace the cartridge in the printer. The ink level indicator is reset to show a full cartridge.
