1. Unplug the Brother printer's power supply and reconnect it after 30 seconds. Wait for the printer to finish restarting.
2. Press the 'Menu' button, select 'LAN,' then 'Network I/F.'
3. Select 'WLAN' using the up or down keys.
4. Press 'OK.'
5. Select 'Yes' when asked 'Reboot OK?'
6. Press 'Menu' and go to 'LAN,' 'Setup 'WLAN,' and select 'Setup Wizard.' The Brother printer then searches for nearby wireless networks.
7. Select your wireless network from the list using the up or down keys and press 'OK.'
8. Depending on your wireless network's security settings, select 'Open System,' 'Shared Key' or WPA/WPA2-PSK.' If you selected 'Open System,' choose 'None' if you don't use encryption or 'WEP' if you do. Contact the person who set up the wireless network if you're unsure which of these options to use.
9. Select 'Key1' using the arrow keys and press 'OK' if you selected 'Open System, WEP' or 'Shared Key' in the previous step, then enter the network password. If selected 'WPA/WPA2,' skip this step.
10. Select the 'AES' encryption type and press 'OK.'
11. Enter your wireless network password if you didn't enter in step 9 and press 'OK.'
12. Select 'Yes' to apply your settings. The Brother printer should now connect to the network. The LCD will briefly display 'Connected' if successful.
13. Unplug the printer's power supply for 30 seconds again, then reconnect it.
14. Open the 'Start' menu on your computer and click 'Devices and Printers.'
15. Click the 'Add a printer...' button near the top of the window and select 'Add a network, wireless or Bluetooth printer.' Your computer then searches for and displays a list of printers on your network.
16. Select the Brother MFC-685CW printer from the list and click 'Next.' Most of the time, it will be the only option presented. Windows should automatically install a driver for the printer.
