1. Install the HP printer drives on your Windows operating system. You do not need to download any drivers. Go to 'Start,' 'Control Panel' and click on 'Devices and Printers.' Click on 'Add a Device' and select your HP printer.
2. Choose the method of installing your HP printer. You can connect either with the USB cable or parallel cable. To use the parallel cable, you must have a parallel port on both your computer and printer.
3. Turn off your computer. Connect either the USB cable or parallel cable from your printer to your computer. Turn the computer back on. Your Windows operating system should detect the HP drivers automatically.
4. Click on 'Locate and Install Driver.' Follow the on-screen instructions for installing the drivers. After installation is complete, Windows should say, 'Devices are ready to use.'
5. Install the HP CD that came with your printer. This CD comes with photo editing and photo sharing software. Follow the instructions for installing the software. Restart your computer for the software to take effect.
6. Test your HP printer. Print out a document, web page or email. If necessary, load an ink cartridge into your HP printer before testing it. Read your instruction manual since cartridges run differently on each version.
