1. Create a business plan for the cartridge recycling business. This will include identifying the demographics and target market for the business, including competition. Determine the location for the business, and describe the type of storefront and operating facility needed for efficient operations. Calculate start-up costs in the business plan.
2. Identify suppliers for ink cartridge refill equipment and ink cartridge supplies. Consider operating a franchise such as Cartridge World USA, which carries more than 150 different inks and toners. Major brands for ink and toner refills include Canon, HP, Epson, Lexmark, Brother and Dell. Ink and toner supplies for each brand will have to be obtained directly from each cartridge supplier to make refills for customers. Additionally, printer ink and toner refill supplies from cartridge manufacturers can be sold.
3. Purchase start-up equipment for the cartridge recycling business. This will include ink cartridge equipment. Consider hiring an engineer to design a custom ink-refilling machine that can be used to refill various types of print cartridge products. Additionally, purchase a cash register and have custom bags and cartridge boxes printed for delivering refill services.
4. Advertise the cartridge recycling services to small and large business owners through direct mailer services. Advertise in local publications and on radio stations and television. Leave brochures at office supply stores with permission.
5. Learn more about the cartridge recycling business and ways to promote recycling by joining the International Cartridge Recycling Association (ICRA). The ICRA can be reached by calling (202) 857-1154.
