1. Examine the power cable's connection to the printer, as well as the power cord's connection with the electrical outlet and the power adapter. Remove the power cord from the outlet and plug in a lamp to make sure the outlet is working.
2. Remove the control panel overlay from the printer if you receive a message directing you to attach the overlay. Open the scanner's cover, insert the tabs on the overlay into the notches hidden by the cover and press the overlay into place and then close the scanner cover.
3. Remove the paper from the input tray if you see a message that tells you the print cartridge alignment failed. Replace the paper with white paper that is size letter or A4 and then repeat the alignment procedure. If the alignment fails again, open the cartridge access door and pull out the cartridges. Then remove any of the protective tape from the nozzle plate or metallic contact points. Reinstall the cartridges and close the access door.
4. Examine the USB cable's connection to the printer and the computer if the printer will not print. Remove the USB cable from any USB hubs or ports in keyboards, plugging the cable into one of the ports in the back of the computer instead.
5. Open all of the printer's covers and doors if you receive a paper jam error message when setting up the printer. Remove any packing material you find inside the printer and then close the covers and doors securely.
Diminished Print Quality
1. Open the print cartridge access door and wait for the cartridge carriage to stop moving. Remove the print cartridges from the carriage and press them back into place so they sit firmly in the carriage and then close the access door.
2. Print a self-test report by holding down the 'Cancel/Resume' button and then press the 'Start Color Copy' button. Examine the self-test printout to see if any breaks appear in the patterns on the page, which would indicate that the print cartridges need to be cleaned.
3. Clean the print cartridges by right-clicking on the printer icon in the right bottom corner of the computer's screen. Click the 'Clean Printhead' option in the menu that appears and then click the radio button labeled 'All' before clicking the 'Clean' button.
4. Open the print cartridge access door and wait for the carriage to stop moving and then pull out the print cartridges. Clean the print cartridges' contact points with a dry cotton swab and then slide the cartridges into their slots in the carriage and close the access door.
5. Replace the print cartridge that is not functioning properly. If the problem persists, take the printer to a repair shop for servicing.
