1. Find the drainage in the room. If it is in a basement area there should be some type of drain pipe or hole in the floor. Usually these are placed near the water heater. There may be a pump located in this hole, known as a sump pump. If there is, make sure that it is on and working properly. If there is no pump, you can either purchase one and run the hose into either a sink drain or the basement floor drain. If that is not an option for you, you can purchase or rent a wet/dry shop vacuum. These have to be emptied often but they will get the job done.If the room that has flooded is a bathroom or any other area in the home that doesn't have a built in drainage; you need to throw every towel, shirt, wash cloth, blanket, and any other fabric item in the house that you can think of, on the water to soak it up as fast as you can. Then skip to step 3.
2. Sweep the water into the hole with a broom. You may have to unclog the pipe every once in a while when debris gets caught in the pump.
3. Dry the floor with a squeegee. Set up fans to dry the floor completely.
4. Replace any drywall that has been damaged by the water. There is no need to replace the entire wall. Simply cut just above the wet drywall Try to stay as straight as you can when cutting. Measure the opening and cut an appropriately sized piece of drywall to cover the space.
5. Mud and tape the drywall. Wait for the drywall mud to completely dry before trying to sand and paint.
