How to Network One Printer to Two Computers

1. Install the printer on each of the two computers by following the installation instructions that came with the printer. This step enables all users to have full access to all of the software related to the printer regardless of the printer's location.
2. Connect the printer to the computer that will share it among the other computers. This computer is the host computer.
3. Connect the ethernet cable from the host computer to the router.
4. Connect the ethernet cable from the second computer to the router.
5. Install the software that came with your router to configure your network on the host computer.
6. Go to the Control Panel, then choose 'Performance and Maintenance,' then 'System.' You can find the Control Panel from your computer's Start menu.
7. Click the 'Computer Name' tab. Click the 'Change' button beside 'To rename this computer or join a domain.'
8. Give your workgroup a name. The default is 'WORKGROUP.' You may have to restart your computer.
9. Repeat on the second computer to ensure both computers share the same workgroup name.
10. Go to the Control Panel on the host computer, then select 'Printers and Other Hardware,' then 'Printers and Faxes.'
11. Click the printer's icon and click 'Share This Printer' on the task pane. Open the properties for the printer and click the 'Sharing' tab.
12. Click 'Share Name,' then click 'OK.' The printer is available for sharing. There will be a hand supporting the printer icon to demonstrate this.
13. Go to the Control Panel on the second computer and click 'Printers and Other Hardware.' Click 'Add a Printer,' then 'Printer Connection.' Click the radio button beside 'A network printer,' then click 'Next.'
14. Click 'Browse.' Find the name of the computer that the printer is attached to and click on it. Highlight the name of your shared printer. Click 'Next.'
15. Click 'OK.' You already have all of the drivers and software installed, so the printer will finish installing fairly quickly.
