How to Troubleshoot a Canon Pixma MP160 Printer

1. Check to make sure that the power supplies are properly connected. Inspect the universal serial bus (USB) port behind the top left side of the printer. Firmly push the cord into the port to ensure that it is connected well. Press the USB cable into the computer's port as well. If the printer still isn't making a proper connection, connect the USB cable to another port on the computer. The current port may have malfunctioned.
2. Review the ink levels on both ink cartridges. Click on the Pixma MP160 printer icon located on the desktop or taskbar on the computer screen. A new window will appear with three options to choose from. Select 'Printer Status.' A new screen will open indicating the current ink levels, as well as print jobs in process. Replace ink cartridges that indicate a low or empty level before printing.
3. Inspect the paper feed rollers for paper jams. Open the top of the Canon printer by lifting the operation panel, which located just below the scanner bed. Slowly turn the white plastic wheel located on the inner left side of the printer. Gently pull out any jammed pieces of paper from the rollers as you turn the wheel. Once the paper has been removed, close the panel and perform a print test.
4. Clean the print head nozzle to correct lines or blotches that may be appearing on documents or photos. Click on the MP160 printer icon on the desktop or taskbar on the screen. Select 'Printer Settings' from the options provided. Choose the 'Maintenance' tab, then select 'Cleaning' for a basic cleaning or 'Deep Clean' for a more-thorough cleaning. Upon completion, print a test page to ensure that the nozzle is clean. Severely clogged nozzles will need to be replaced.
5. Refer to the owner's manual if the printer issue is beyond simple troubleshooting. Regular maintenance should be performed to ensure that the printer continues to function properly.
