How to Clean a HP Deskjet Printer (4 Steps)

1. Turn off your printer and unplug it. Take out any removable parts, such as the paper tray. Open the lid and remove the ink cartridges. Check to see if they are leaking inside the printer. If so, they are defective and you need to replace them. If not, your problem is probably with the rollers. Either way, take a microfiber cloth or the sleeve off an old t-shirt and dip it in a bowl of distilled water. Wipe out any ink spots or smudges. If there's any ink you can't reach with your cloth, dip a cotton swab in the water and use it to gently dab at the spot.
2. Hold your can of compressed air upright and use it to blow the dust out of any cracks or crevices you can't reach with the cloth. Dip a second cloth in the distilled water, completely saturating it. Then wring it out so that it doesn't drip. Gently wipe down the rollers, turning them as needed so you get all sides. Touch them only with the cloth and never with your hands. Then, lightly spray a sheet of standard printer paper with water and feed it through the printer manually to catch any remaining stray ink.
3. Close the printer and wipe the top, back and sides with a paper towel dipped in rubbing alcohol or vinegar. Again, use a cotton swab to wipe out any tight areas, such as around the printer's buttons. Use the same method to clean the printer parts you removed in Step 1.
4. Open the printer again and let it air dry for at least 20 minutes. Replace the ink cartridges and removable parts once you no longer see any wet spots. Then, power up the printer and run a test page to ensure your cleaning did the trick.
