1. Turn the printer on and open the top cover and the ink tank cover underneath. Remove each ink tank by pressing on the tab on the front of the ink tank as you lift it out of the machine.
2. Remove any tape on the ink tanks and place them back in their labeled spots in the carriage. Press on the top of each ink tank so it clicks into place, then close both covers.
3. Click on the 'Start' button (the Windows logo) at the bottom left corner of the computer screen and select 'Devices and Printers.' Right-click on the icon for your Canon printer, then select 'Properties.' Click on the 'Maintenance' tab and click on 'Cleaning.' Select 'All Colors,' then 'Execute' and wait for the printer to clean the print head.
4. Click on the Windows button, then 'Devices and Printers' and right-click the icon for your Canon printer. Click on 'Printing Preferences,' then 'Maintenance' and 'Custom Settings.' Select 'Align Print Heads Manually,' then click on 'Send' and 'OK.'
5. Select the 'Maintenance' tab, then click on 'Print Head Alignment' and 'Print Head Alignment' again. Click on 'OK.' Wait for the test sheet to print, then click on 'Yes.' Select the number of the group under 'A' that showed the least amount of vertical stripes, then do the same through column 'L' and click on 'OK.'
6. Click on 'OK' to print another pattern sheet, then 'OK' once more. Enter the number under both 'M' and 'N' that shows the least amount of banding, then click on 'OK.'
