1. Pause or stop the printer the moment that fading pages begin to roll off the machine. Click on the printer icon on the computer screen and choose the 'Pause' or 'Stop Printing' option.
2. Open the cover of the printer and wait for the carriage to stop moving right and left. The carriage should pause near the middle of the printer.
3. Locate the small black box or boxes on the carriage. These are the printer cartridges.
4. Remove the printer cartridge(s) according to the manufacturer's instructions. Generally, the cartridge pulls forward at an angle, then pops out. Do not attempt to remove the cartridge(s) forcefully.
5. Shake each cartridge for about 20 seconds to re-distribute the remaining ink inside.
6. Rub the nozzles in the printer where the cartridges were installed with a cotton swab dipped in alcohol. This will dissolve and remove dried ink that might be clogging the printer, causing the pages to print poorly.
7. Gently swab the bottom and back of each printer cartridge with a cotton swab dipped in alcohol.
8. Wait 10 minutes for the alcohol to evaporate and dry completely.
9. Lower the bottom half of the printer cartridge into a bowl of warm water to loosen the ink inside on cartridges with copper contact strips on the underside. Don't submerge the cartridge.
10. Wipe the cartridges dry with paper towels.
11. Replace the printer cartridges in the carriage and close the cover to resume printing. Depending on the model, the cartridge should provide enough ink to continue printing another 10 pages.
12. Replace the cartridge with a fresh one as soon as possible.
