1. Click 'Start,' right-click 'Computer' and click 'Properties' on the computer you want to access remotely. Click 'Remote settings,' 'Allow connections from computers running any version of Remote Desktop (less secure)' and 'OK.' Close the System Properties window.
2. Press the 'Windows' and 'R' keys. Type 'cmd' and press 'Enter.' Type 'ipconfig/all.' Leave this window open.
3. Click 'Start,' type 'connections' and click 'View network connections.' Right-click the network adapter and click 'Properties.'
4. Click 'Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4)' in the list and click 'Properties.' Enter the physical address from the command line window in the IP address field. Enter the Subnet and Default Gateway from command prompt in the corresponding fields as well. Click 'OK' twice and close the Network Connections window.
5. Open a web browser and type in the router's IP address. Enter the username and password for the device when prompted. This information can be found in the product documentation.
6. Go to the Port Triggering or Forwarding section. Add a new service with the IP address of the computer, the port 3389, then type 'remotedesktop' for the name of the service. Apply the changes.
7. Record the router's external IP address. This will be found in the basic information section. Close the web browser.
8. Click 'Start,' 'All Programs,' 'Accessories' and 'Remote Desktop Connection' on a remote computer. Enter the IP address for the router in the text box and click 'Connect.' Enter your username and password when prompted.
9. Click 'Computer' and 'Network' on the left to access network resources as you would with a VPN.
