1. Shake the cartridge. Chances are at least a small amount of toner has clumped together and has gone undetected. You can get a good hundred pages out of a few simple shakes; more if you're lucky! Make sure with this that you hold the cartridge over a trash can. It's unlikely that you'll make any big mess, but some loose toner shakes off.
2. Trick that sensor! Almost every printer has a sensor on the side where the cartridge is inserted that tells the printer to stop printing after toner gets to a certain level. These levels are often way off, though, and copiers and printers can chug out more prints without any print quality issues. Simply cover up this sensor with a piece of masking or electrical tape and you'll be able to keep printing away.
3. Swab the area on the toner cartridge where the toner is injected into the printer. This is different on every model but should be quite easy to find. If there is a clog, it may make the printer read as the cartridge being empty.
4. Turn off the internal print counter for your printer. Many printers read toner levels. Using the software that comes with your printer, you can reset this counter. Check your instruction manual for details. It will often provide a step-by-step guide on how to reset the counter via your computer.
5. If you find that you are repeatedly running out of toner far before you should be, call a technician to clean out the dispensers inside the machine. Toner can get clogged here and be wasted. This is also a good maintenance technique for keeping the printer running smoothly. It can degrade print quality and cause other mechanical issues.
