1. Change the cartridges if the printer is failing to print or if the content appears light or streaked. Open the front panel on the HP 9800 and move the ink cartridges to the right side, giving you clear access. Remove the cartridges and slide in the replacement ink. Then close the access lid.
2. Check the USB data cable connection. If the cable is not inserted into both the printer and the computer securely, the print request is not going to reach the printer.
3. Remove the USB data cable from the computer, then insert it into a different USB port. USB ports may die out on computers, resulting in hardware malfunctions when attached to the computer.
4. Install updated drives onto your computer if the system is not detecting the printer even after you change the USB connection and power on the print. For the most up-to-date drivers, navigate to the HP.com website, choose 'support,' then click the 'drivers' option. Type in 'Deskjet 9800' into the 'device' search bar and click 'search.' Once the printer information appears on the screen, choose the operating system you are running and click 'download.' Once the drivers have downloaded to the computer, double-click the file to launch the driver installation wizard. Follow the prompts of the wizard to complete the hardware setup.
