1. Make sure that the Deskjet 5650 has paper loaded and that it is turned on. The printer will need to print a test pattern after the ink cartridges are replaced.
2. Swing the front door of the printer up to open it. This will expose the carrier for the print cartridges. Each cartridge is protected by a plastic cover which swings up to reveal the cartridge.
3. Open one of the plastic covers, then remove the ink cartridge by pulling it toward you.
4. Remove the replacement ink cartridge from the package. The cartridge has a strip of tape protecting the metal contacts on the bottom. Peel the tape away, but do not touch the metal contacts.
5. Place the empty ink cartridge in the packaging for the new cartridge to avoid a stain or spill until you are ready to recycle it.
6. Insert the new ink cartridge in the same orientation as the old one, with the metal contacts facing to the left. Position the cartridge slightly below the holder, then push up and in until the cartridge snaps into place.
7. Repeat these steps for the second ink cartridge if you are replacing both, then close the front door of the printer. The printer will automatically print a test page to confirm that the cartridges are installed correctly.
