1. Determine if your printer is turned on. This may seem obvious, but it is a frequent mistake. Check the status on the LCD screen (it should read 'Ready') and make sure the power lamp is green and not flashing.
2. Check for error messages. Look for messages or message indicators on both the printer's LCD screen and on your desktop. Indicators may include flashing lights or a solid red light instead of a green one. Refer to your manual to check the meaning of these.
3. Check the paper tray to see if it is empty. If you're not sure where the paper tray is, check the manual or look carefully on the body of the printer for a symbol or icon. Pull gently on some obvious places, but be careful not to break anything.
4. Check for paper jams. Examine the printer from all angles to search for a paper jam. Use tweezers to pull out any remnants you see. You may need to remove some panels in order to access inner parts of the printer.
5. Check the ink cartridges. The printer will usually indicate if the ink is low, but discolored or faded prints are telltale signs as well. Check the manual for instructions on replacing a cartridge.
6. Check the cables. It is possible that a USB or printer cable has been knocked loose. Make sure all the plugs are attached firmly on the back of the printer and follow them to your computer and ensure they are attached there as well.
7. Try reinstalling the drivers. If the printer is physically fine, then remove your old drivers and download new ones. Use the disc that came with your printer or visit Canon's website to download new ones.
