How to Clean a Brother Drum 5140 (12 Steps)

1. Turn off your Brother HL-5140 printer at the power switch. Make certain that the printer is loaded with paper.
2. Push and hold the 'Go' button down until the 'Paper' light turns on and off and the 'Toner' light turns on. Stop pressing the button.
3. Press the 'Go' button, release it and wait for the test page to print.
4. Check the printout for areas of poor print quality. If you don't see any, throw away the page. If see print quality issues, set the page aside to use later while cleaning.
Clean the Drum
1. Lay pieces of paper on the tabletop where you're going to clean the HL-5140 drum.
2. Press the front cover button to unlock the cover and then flip the cover down to reveal the printer interior.
3. Grasp the drum unit assembly handle and pull it from the printer. Lay it on the paper-covered tabletop.
4. Place your finger on the blue slider tab located on the back top of the assembly. Slide the tab back and forth from right to left three to five times to clean the corona wire inside the assembly. When finished, return the tab to its original position.
5. Push down on the blue lock lever on the front, right side of the assembly to unlock the toner cartridge. Lift the toner from the assembly, place it in a plastic bag and set it aside.
6. Compare the location of poor print quality areas on the test page, if applicable, with marks on the OPC drum: grasp the drum gear on the left side and roll it toward you to move the drum by hand as you look from the page to the drum surface. If the test page didn't have marks, turn the gear and simply look at the drum to verify that it's clear of glue, toner or paper particles or pieces. When you're finished looking, wipe any marks that you find away with cotton swabs.
7. Remove the toner cartridge from the bag and return it to the assembly when you're finished cleaning the drum. Push it into the assembly until you hear it lock in place with a click. Check that the blue lock lever has returned to its original position.
8. Pick up the drum assembly, insert it back into its cavity in the printer and then close the printer front cover.
