1. Lift the top cover of the HP OfficeJet 4550 to access the scanner glass. Clean the entire surface of the glass with a soft cloth and a non-abrasive glass cleaner, then clean the corners of the glass with a cotton swab dipped in the same cleaning solution. Continue to clean the scanner glass until you no longer see streaks or spots on your copies and scanned documents.
2. Remove all of the paper from the paper tray and pull the paper guides out all the way Reload the paper tray and push the paper guides until they are tight against the paper. If the paper is too loose in the tray, the paper can feed in skewed. If the paper is too tight in the tray, the J4550 could grab two or three pieces of paper at once.
3. Open the front of the HP OfficeJet 4550 and remove the print cartridges. Set the print cartridges aside and clean the interior of the printer thoroughly. Use a small vacuum cleaner like the kind used to clean computer components until you have removed all the accumulated paper dust and ink residue.
4. Clean the metal portion of the print cartridges thoroughly, using a cotton swab dipped in warm water. Continue to clean the print cartridges until you no longer see streaks or smears on the printouts.
